Latino Community: Powered by Latinas
Community is everything to Latinos. We connect being 'good' and 'worthy' to our role in the community. When I think about my time in Colombia, community was and still is the lifeline of how everything worked there. We practiced group economics — families and extended families living together, supporting each other in every way. In the Latino community, it’s common for adult children to live with their parents until marriage or to have parents who need support live with adult children; it is common and expected. These micro-communities built by family and extended family strengthen us; they provide care and stability.
The Power of Connection
Beyond family, there is the extended Latino community — neighbors, coworkers, and friends who become like family. Everyone knows each other in the neighborhood, they look after one another, and step in when they see something is needed. It’s this deep-rooted culture of connection and community that has enabled us to overcome so much adversity in developing countries. This network of care is what often keeps us grounded, even we navigate difficult challenges.
Latinas: The Heart of the Latino Community
Latinas play a key role in the Latino community. They are the leaders at home — literally feeding everyone, checking in on each family member, and ensuring that everyone is cared for to the best of their ability. Latinas also hold major influence in family and social spaces. They can motivate, organize, and inspire change. Sometimes that motivation comes with some guilt incentives — not always the most optimal, but undeniably effective! Our strength lies in our ability to hold things together, to care for one another, and to uplift the people around us.
Empowering Latinas as Leaders
I often daydream about what our Latino community and society would look like if we empowered Latinas as leaders rather than influencers. What if every Latina felt her voice mattered? That she could contribute meaningfully — financially and emotionally — to her home and her community? That she is worthy of having a seat at the table without having to perform mental gymnastics to make everyone else around her comfortable? Imagine a world where Latinas lead confidently, where their power is recognized and celebrated as a strength instead of being viewed as something threatening to the system, the culture, and the community.
A Vision for the Future
I wonder what the world would look like when Latinas can live fully in their power, on their own terms. When they are living fully in their confidence as aspirational role models for the next generation, imagine Latinas having the space to be fully themselves — not boxed in by outdated narratives or limited by stereotypes. That’s the kind of future I dream about, where Latinas can feel proud, capable, and free to create their own version of success and not be excluded from the Latino community.
Breaking Patterns and Building Prosperity
The type of woman I aspire to be and hope to see more of in our community can change everything. They are the key to breaking cycles of poverty that have plagued us generation after generation, so we can build collective prosperity. When Latinas rise, our entire community rises with them. I believe that Latinas are key to Latino community’s success. Para las guerreras, las luchadoras, las que no se rinden – I am with you in the fight, today and always (To the warriors, the fighters, the ones who don’t give up - I am with you in the fight).
