Latinas and Money:
Why This Movement Needs To Exist Now
Here’s What You Need to Know
Latinas and Money is a movement. This community is by a Latina for Latinas, to cultivate our financial knowledge and change our lives and communities in the process – the mission: to help Latinas achieve a $500k net worth.
Why Latinas and Money?
You might be wondering: Why Latinas and Money? Why focus on financial literacy in the Latino community — and specifically in women?
When I first thought about building a business, I thought about the changes I wanted to see in the world and the things that really frustrated me. One thing that really frustrates me is the lack of financial education and financial literacy among Latinas.
In my early 20s, God put financial literacy in my path. I was new in my city, and my church was offering Financial Peace University, and even though I had no background in it, I decided to take the class, thinking that maybe I would meet people there. That experience opened my eyes to concepts like debt and how detrimental it could be to my life.
But what stood out most was this: I couldn’t find anyone who was Latino and relatable talking about money at that time. And that realization eventually became the seed for my passion project: Latinas and Money.
Today, more people are online than ever talking about all kinds of things. Some are truthful, and some aren’t, but what is important is that it is sparking conversations and thinking. I believe there is a place for my voice in this noisy personal finance space. Why? Simply because I am passionate about serving my community. Because I am tired, angry, and frustrated to see Latinas working their entire lives and have very little or nothing to show for it in the end. In America, the opportunities are great, but so are the temptations, the temptation to take shortcuts to pay for convenience. I am here to bring clarity and guide Latinas to focus on the money so they have more options and can live life on their terms.
My Financial Journey
When I first started, I was in debt like many young people: I had credit card debt, a student loan, and a car loan.
Through Financial Peace University, I learned principles that began to shift my money mindset. I got serious about paying off debt and setting myself up for the future. Over the years, I walked through the baby steps — step by step, month by month — until eventually, I found myself at baby step seven.
This journey took more than 10 years! Of sacrifice, of discipline, of delayed gratification. When I talk to young people today, many reject the idea of budgeting and money management because they want to spend without restrictions, but that is like dieting with no limits. Part of adulting is learning to self-manage, to not depend on someone else to come along and put us on a time-out when we do something harmful to our well-being or hurt someone else. Not managing your money, not being intentional with one of your most important resources (outside of your health and time), is harmful to you. Harming your future harms yourself and the people who will inevitably need to step in to support and help you as you age. It is irresponsible and can have horrible consequences. I know that the US financial system is complicated, and the terminology is cumbersome. But, the option to not learn is not a viable option – especially for Latinas who are a central source of support to their immediate and extended families.
Why Does Latinas and Money Focus on Women?
Here’s why: I believe it’s a tragedy to work your entire life, as hard as Latinos do, and end up with nothing to show for it.
And for women, money is even more essential because it means safety in many circumstances. Let's be honest, money gives us options. Without it, too many women are left vulnerable — staying in unhealthy relationships, accepting unfair treatment, or simply aging and eventually becoming dependent on government systems or their children (who may or may not be able to support them). But with financial education, Latinas can lead at home and in our community.
I chose to focus on women because I know that women are more likely to reinvest what they learn and earn back into their families. I decided to invest my money, time, and physical energy to create this business and invest in Latinas because I know that in our community, women are frequently working to earn outside of the home and at home are carrying the majority of the unpaid labor associated with raising children, supporting aging parents, and keeping the house going. I choose to focus on women because I want them to be confident leaders at home, not just taking care of the people in it and keeping the home, but making the big material investment decisions that many of us need to make as adults, armed with confidence and knowledge. I chose to focus on women because I admire them, the single mothers, the immigrants, the fighters (this is for you!) – because I identified with you, I feel empathy and compassion for your stories (in you, I see my story, my mom’s story, my aunts stories, my sister’s story and all the women’s shoulders who I stand on today). Yet, I have prepared myself to push you beyond what you think is possible so that together we can create unimaginable prosperity in our community.
Navigating the Complex U.S. Financial System
The U.S. financial system is not simple. Credit, saving, investing, retirement, insurance, healthcare, paying for education— the list goes on.
Even with an advanced degree, I found it challenging to figure out how to navigate the American financial system. And on top of that, we live in one of the most marketed-to countries in the world, constantly bombarded with messages to spend.
My experience with Latinas has been that we often shy away from money conversations. Instead of looking for education, we often try to reinvent the wheel and learn by trial and error. I think this is a huge mistake. The reality is that the internet has made information readily available, but we are overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by the messaging, the constantly increasing list of responsibilities, and the continually growing work and family demands.
Not to mention the overwhelming nature of having endless options to meet any need that arises and having to sort through them. For many of us, time went by quickly, and all of a sudden, we found ourselves here with infinite options and possibilities thanks to the internet. Still, no one told us how overwhelming and taxing this new reality was going to be for the human brain and body. No one told us that as our attention became more and more monetizable with social media, our ability to manage our time and attention would become astronomically more difficult. How then are we also supposed to create capacity for the emotional, physical, and mental work necessary for us to learn and implement personal finance strategies? So here we are, Latinas and Money is about creating simplicity and urgency for us/Latinas, to make time and tackle this vital part of our lives.
The $500k Net Worth Goal for Latinas
So, what’s the goal? A $500k in net worth.
Yes, it’s ambitious. Yes, it’s audacious. But it’s also doable and achievable.
Why net worth? Because net worth forces us to look at both assets and liabilities. It pushes us to think about depreciation on big items. And it gives us a clear, measurable way to track progress over time.
My mission is to help Latinas get out of debt, build healthy money habits, and achieve that $500K milestone. Because getting there takes grind, discipline, and in the process, you are developing the money habits that can take you to the $1M dollar mark and beyond. But more importantly, at the $500K mark, you have escaped the surviving cycle of living crisis to crisis, you have options and choice. You can choose to keep going and grow your money, you can choose to focus on something else, like family, but at least you have a choice, and if a situation is unhealthy, toxic, or simply doesn’t serve you, you have the resources to be able to choose to leave.
The Ripple Effect – Community
Here’s what excites me most: when one Latina becomes financially literate, it is unlikely that she will keep that knowledge to herself. She shares it with her family, her friends, her children. And creates a literacy ripple effect that is powerful.
My dream is to be the spark for one million Latinas to thrive financially. Imagine the ripple that would create! more kids raised with money confidence, more families breaking cycles of poverty, our community prospering!
Wouldn’t it be incredible if the word Latina were associated with wealth and financial stability — the way “Swiss” and wealth go together? That’s the vision for Latinas and Money: that little by little, we are building the habits and a culture that doesn’t have to struggle anymore. That little by little, we are changing the norm of Latinos working two jobs, three jobs, because they have grown in their ability to earn and grow their wealth! That we are normalizing Latinos retiring and not working until they physically can no longer work. We are normalizing rest, recharging, healthy work boundaries, and creating capacity for Latinos to intentionally build a life they can afford and love.
Join the Movement
At the end of the day, Latinas and Money is about community. It’s about breaking cycles, challenging the status quo, and building a future where we are financially strong, independent, and unafraid to talk about money.
I’m not perfect. I’m knowledgeable, but still learning, just like you. And that’s okay — because this is a journey we are going on together. I want you to know this: You can do this. You can save, invest, and build wealth. You can break the poverty cycle in your family. And you don’t have to do it alone.
